POSITIONS – 17 | Structures
Group exhibition | JoDD von Schaffstein – Carsten Westphal – Joan Costa
Duration of the exhibition: 22.12.2024 - 01.01.2025
We are pleased to announce the group exhibition “Positions - 17” at Galeria HMH I in Port Andratx.
Curator and gallery director Andreas Streicher presents a special selection of art positions from different art movements for the duration of +/- one week and explains the deeper meanings and backgrounds of these works of art to visitors.
The exhibition Structures brings together three artists who explore the concept of structure in nature, material, and perception in diverse ways. Through painting, sculpture, and experimental visual art, they create a compelling dialogue about the fragility and permanence of forms.
Carsten Westphal, known as the “Desert Painter,” captures the raw, elemental structure of deserts on canvas. His works are characterized by layers of natural pigments and sand, sourced directly from the landscapes he depicts. Westphal’s paintings evoke the earthy textures and stark beauty of desert expanses, blending the elemental forces of nature with a poetic reflection on transience and durability.
With his Paper Column, sculptor Joan Costa provides a striking focal point in the exhibition. Costa challenges the boundaries of materiality by transforming paper – a fragile, everyday material – into a monumental form. The column appears both monumental and delicate, raising questions about our perception of stability and the role of structures in art and architecture.
Finally, Jodd explores fluid structures of perception in his transformative painting. His works are not static but exist in constant flux – colors and forms seem to oscillate depending on the viewer’s angle or the light. The canvas itself becomes a dynamic structure, inviting the viewer to engage in the creative process of change.
The exhibition Structures delves into the multifaceted nature of structures: as physical elements, abstract concepts, and dynamic processes. Westphal, Costa, and Jodd invite us to reflect on the stability, fragility, and transformation of the world – both material and immaterial.
