Oceans in shimmering summer light and the deep blue of night, powerful winter storms and peaceful beach landscapes, striking cloud formations as light plays of nature. When you look at the "Images of the Sea" by Michael Weigel, you can feel his fascination and passion for sky and sea. For over 30 years, the artist has dedicated himself to this theme.

This artistic passion has taken Weigel (born in 1973 in Hesse) through Borkum, Corsica, and Hamburg to the Lübeck Bay. He has also pursued his enthusiasm for the nature of the sea in theory; after completing his art studies, he earned a doctorate in 2005 on the aesthetics of nature. For years, Michael Weigel has now devoted himself exclusively to painting. He has made Scharbeutz-Haffkrug his chosen home, and his studio is located right on the beach, just a stone's throw from the water's edge. In winter, the artist also enjoys working in Mallorca and Fuerteventura to study the waves and light moods of the south.

Weigel is not concerned with the realistic depiction of specific places. Rather, his works are traditionally oil-on-canvas compositions that incorporate his sea experiences gathered from around the globe: "My paintings are not reproductions of a motif, but results of the sea nature experienced and loved in many places," he says. He is also preoccupied with the question of how nature, in its fascinating beauty, points to an origin, a designer, a creator.

His works are featured in renowned galleries and have been displayed in numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including exhibition tours to Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, and the USA.
