Open Call: International Mail Art Project – A23a: The World’s Largest Iceberg
Join us in raising awareness of climate change through art!
Duration of the mail art exhibition: 01.08.2025 - 31.08.2025
We invite artists worldwide to participate in a unique Mail Art project addressing climate change through the story of A23a, the world’s largest iceberg.
Background
A23a calved from the Antarctic Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in 1986 and remained grounded
for decades. After breaking free in 2000, ocean currents held it in place – until now.
Recent satellite images reveal its movement toward South Georgia, where it will encounter warmer waters, break into smaller icebergs, and eventually melt. Spanning 4,000 square
kilometers, its surface has been shaped by waves and weather, forming arches and
hollowed-out cavities.
The Project
All submitted artworks will be put together to form a massive iceberg sculpture,
symbolizing the fragility of our planet’s polar regions. The final piece will be exhibited at
Galeria HMH In Port Andratx, Mallorca, from August 1 –31, 2025, and featured in an
online catalog. Galeria HMH will will also add the exhibition to the Artfacts database.
The first work of art to arrive will be the ‘tip of the iceberg’ sculpture and will be
mentioned separately in the press release!
